How to join a network on Facebook

In addition to Facebook groups and pages, there's something called a network. Usually, big and/or prestigious organizations/schools are the "networks" on Facebook. Examples are Microsoft, Google, Stanford, Harvard, etc. It's a prestigious thing to have your school listed on the Facebook Networks list. Some networks are open (i.e. anyone can join) while others require your work e-mail (or college e-mail ID) for joining. They send you a confirmation mail and it's only after you click the confirmation link that you're a part of the network. One example is the Microsoft Student Partners network which requires an @student-partners.com e-mail ID. The Microsoft network requires you to have an @microsoft.com e-mail ID.

Unfortunately, many people are still unaware of networks and the prestige that comes with being part of a big network (a network doesn't have to be big, just prestigious to find a place on the networks list).

This tutorial teaches you how to join a network.

1. On the top right corner of your Facebook home page or profile page or any page is a button Account. When you click it you will see a drop-down list.

2. From the list, select Account settings.

3. On the screen that follows now, click the Networks tab.

4. Then start typing the name of your workplace or school, for example, to join the NIT Srinagar network, type National Institute of Technology, Srinagar.

5. Just type in your year of graduation (for example 2013) and bingo! You are now part of the network.

6. To join the MSP network, type Microsoft Student Partners

7. You will see a prompt that asks for your e-mail ID. Provide your @student-partners.com or the new @msptechrep.com e-mail ID.

8. Go to your official MSP mail id and click the confirmation link. You might have to disable your pop-up blocker or hold down the Ctrl key while clicking the confirmation link. The Microsoft Student Partners network will now show up in your employers list (Profile>Info tab>Work and Education Information). Add the duration for which you have been an MSP (e.g. September, 2009 to present) and you will have butterflies in your stomach :)

  2. @Anonymous: The benefit is same as that of Facebook itself :) Nothing more, nothing less. It's just prestigious to have your school or workplace listed on the Facebook networks list. You can actually see all the people in that network and probably add them.

    Hope that helped :)
    Any more questions are welcome.

  5. @botja .. Hey, I just tried it out. And yes, you're right! It won't accept msptechrep e-mail IDs. I'll write to someone and try getting it fixed. Thanks for pointing this out.
